J Stevens (they/them) is a Calgary-born, Toronto-based filmmaker. With over a decade of experience behind the camera, J’s mission is to continue bringing dynamic, personal and visually captivating LGBTQ+ content to the forefront.
J is the co-creator, cinematographer and director of the high-energy 10-episode mockumentary series, Slo Pitch, which launched on OUTtv in Canada and KindaTV in the US.
As a director, they have been awarded the LGBTQ+ Spotlight Award at the 2020 TO Web Fest for Slo Pitch, as well as the Best Canadian Short at the 2019 Inside Out LGBT Film Festival for Soft Spot.
J won Best Cinematography at the 2018 48 Hour Film Festival in Toronto for Sir Ludwig’s DuClaudian Twins are Alive & Well and Living in the Same Building. They are the cinematographer of the feature film, Hazy Little Thing, which made its World Premiere at the 2020 Canadian Film Festival (in collaboration with SuperChannel), as well as the short film Pros & Cons (Official Selection of Telefilm’s Cannes 2020 Not Short on Talent program), and the forthcoming BODY SO FLUORESCENT, which won the OutACTRAto x Inside Out LGBT Film Festival “Queer Your Stories” Short Film Competition.
